The Dignity of the Human Person 

  • we are made in the image of God 

  • the person is sacred, the clearest reflection of God among us 

  • judge any economic system by what it does for and to people 

  • the test of every institution or policy is whether it enhances or threatens human life and dignity

 

The Call to Live in Community/Concern for the Common Good 

  • the human person is not only sacred but social 

  • we realize our dignity and achieve our rights in relationship with others 

  • the family is the basic cell of society

 

Rights & responsibilities of the Human Person 

  • every person has the right to life, to bodily integrity, and to the means which are necessary for the proper development of life 

  • these means are primarily food, clothing, shelter, rest, medical care, and finally the necessary social services

 

The Dignity of Work 

  • work is a vocation and a participation in creation 

  • workers have rights to decent work, to just wages, to form and join unions 

  • the economy exists for the human person, not the other way around

 

Preferential option for the Poor

  • the poor are not an annoyance or burden but an opportunity 

  • the justice of a society is tested by its treatment of the poor

 

Solidarity 

  • implies acceptance and recognition of the fact that we are interdependent 

  • stand united with the poor and powerless 

  • loving our neighbor has global dimensions 

  • helps us to see the "other" as our neighbor
